A New Kind of Sleep Medicine

Pediatric polysomnography is its own discipline. Children sleep differently than adults — their EEG patterns, respiratory norms, arousal thresholds, and behavioral responses to sleep disruption all require age-specific interpretation. The scoring rules are different. The electrode placements are adapted. The clinical context — encompassing developmental considerations, congenital conditions, neurological differences, and family dynamics — demands a practice that is technically precise and genuinely child-centered.

When Albertario joined Weill Cornell Medicine's pediatric sleep program in 2012, he brought more than three decades of adult sleep expertise and applied it to building something new from the ground up.

From Opening to Accreditation

As Pediatric Sleep Lab Specialist, Albertario provided all levels of sleep technical consultation, management, and provisioning of overnight sleep studies for the Pediatric Sleep Center. This included every aspect of clinical operations — study protocols, technical training, quality assurance, and the documentation infrastructure required for formal accreditation.

The center achieved AASM accreditation within three years of opening — a reflection of the standards that were in place from the start rather than built toward a review. Earning accreditation is a meaningful threshold; earning it quickly speaks to how the foundation was laid.

In-Patient Testing: NICU and PICU

The work extended well beyond the walls of the sleep laboratory. Albertario provided ambulatory in-patient testing services throughout NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, including in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Performing polysomnography in a NICU or PICU is technically demanding and requires close coordination with the clinical team. The patients are among the most fragile in the hospital. Doing the work well — obtaining a technically valid study while minimizing disturbance to an already compromised patient — requires a level of skill and adaptability that goes well beyond standard laboratory practice.

Research: Sensory-Safe Sleep Studies

In 2020, Albertario co-authored a published abstract examining a new approach to pediatric sleep testing for children with special sensory needs:

The work addresses a genuine clinical challenge: children with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing differences, and related conditions are among those most likely to struggle with the electrode application and environmental demands of a standard overnight sleep study — and also among those who may benefit most from having one. Developing a more accommodating protocol is both a practical and ethical imperative.

Ongoing Pediatric Commitment

Albertario's pediatric work extends beyond the laboratory. Since January 2019, he has served as a volunteer panelist on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's Pediatric Inter-Scorer Reliability (ISR) panel, providing monthly Gold Standard scoring that helps establish and maintain the benchmarks used to evaluate scorer performance across the field.

It is the kind of behind-the-scenes contribution that keeps clinical standards honest — and it reflects a consistent pattern in how Albertario has approached his career: show up for the work that matters, whether or not it comes with visible recognition.
